The day in the life of an SEO

The day in the life of an SEO pro (SEO addict)

This is what a day in the life of an SEO addict Olga Zarr looks like.

The Life of an SEO is Never Dull

Being an SEO means constantly learning, optimizing, and immersing yourself in search strategy. It’s an addiction and obsession for those of us who thrive on analyzing data, finding insights, and executing creative solutions to rank higher. No two days are ever the same in the life of an SEO! In this article, I’ll walk you through what a typical day looks like for me as an independent SEO consultant.

Waking Up with SEO on the Brain

5 AM – My eyes snap open, sometimes even earlier. I grab my phone in bed to review my goals and to-do list for the day ahead. Just to get my brain activated, I’ll read an SEO-related article or listen to a podcast episode.

Fueling Up and Getting Ready 6 AM

Time to start the day! I get up, wash my face, brush my teeth, and prepare my ritual yerba mate tea. I usually have a small breakfast as well before sitting down at my workspace.

The Most Productive Hours 6:30 AM

I plop down in my ergonomic chair and fire up my large dual monitors. This is when my brain is most energized, so I need to take advantage of it. I put on my headphones, turn on my SEO playlist, and get ready for some deep focus work.

7 AM to 11 AM

These morning hours are my prime time for heads-down strategic SEO work. I might be writing content for my own website, crafting link building outreach emails, analyzing analytics, doing keyword research, or any other brainpower-intensive tasks. I work for about 4 hours straight, avoiding any distractions or interruptions. Being in my own home office is crucial, since I’d get nothing done in a noisy agency office environment.

Recharging After a Tough Morning 11 AM

My brain is fried after powering through complex SEO tasks for hours. Time for a mental break! I change into my running clothes and head out the door for some exercise. Nothing re-energizes me like a nice long run (I’ve been a runner for years). A workout is key to feeling refreshed and ready for round 2.

Lunch Break and Quick Recharge 12 PM

After my run, I fix myself a nourishing lunch, drink more yerba mate, and catch up on some personal tasks. This 30-60 minute break lets me transition my mindset from SEO to the afternoon ahead.

Back at It Again 1 PM

And just like that, I’m back at my desk, ready to grind out a few more hours. My brain doesn’t focus as sharply in the afternoons, so I schedule meetings, calls, interviews, and other collaborative work during this time. I connect with teammates, clients, or guests and knock out some lighter SEO-related tasks.

Late Afternoon SEO 2 PM to 6 PM

These late afternoon hours tend to drag, so I get through them by switching between different types of tasks. I may research and analyze competitors, work on client reports, write content, film YouTube videos, or optimize my website. Having variety helps me stay engaged as the day wears on.

End of the Workday Wind Down 6 PM

I start powering down and wrapping up whatever task I’m on once the clock strikes 6. I know from experience that I’m incapable of quality work past this point. I back up my work, answer any lingering emails/messages, organize my to-do list for tomorrow, and officially sign off for the day.

Evening Recovery Routine 7 PM

With work behind me, it’s time to mentally decompress! I take my for a long walk, get some reading in, and just relax. If I’m not completely burnt out, I may spend an hour learning something new SEO-related. But in general, I try not to work in the evenings as it cuts into my personal recharge time.

Lights Out and Reset

10 PM – I start winding down and getting ready for bed around this time. I’m an early riser, so getting enough sleep is crucial. I set my alarm and do some light stretching before hitting the sheets. Tomorrow will be another action-packed day in the life of an SEO junkie!

The Ideal SEO Day

While every SEO’s schedule varies based on their lifestyle and responsibilities, this is what my perfect day looks like. I’ve optimized my routine over the years to maximize productivity and creativity. But I’m always experimenting and finding new ways to enhance my daily schedule. As an independent consultant, I have the flexibility to shape my days how I want.

Let me know in the comments – what does your ideal day as an SEO look like? I’d **** to hear any tips you have on structuring your time, balancing work and personal life, and squeezing more value out of your workday!
